REPORT DATE: 02-27-2024 REPORT TIME: 0258 UTC REGION: GULF OF MEXICO SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: MISSISSIPPI CANYON 773 IMAGE DATE: 02-26-2024 IMAGE TIME: 1631 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL2B MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 10 meter LOCATION: 28°12'30" N/88°44'17" W AREA: 5.22 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: High REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly appeared to be emanating from an oil facility located approximately 60 nm SE of the Mississippi River Delta. The possible oil had a strong contrast against its background, included well defined edges, and was mostly dark-toned with possible thicker oil that appeared silvery and brownish in some areas. The slick measured approximately 4.5 nm long, and 0.9 nm at the widest point. Winds near the time of the image were out of the SW at approximately 8 kts. NRC# 1392383 was collocated with this slick and reported that crude oil was released from an overboard water line into the Gulf of Mexico. UNCERTAINTIES: Due to the close proximity of known natural oil seeps, the precise extent of the slick associated with this MPSR cannot be determined. In addition, it appears that an unknown portion of the reported anomaly may have overlapped with a natural oil seep in the vicinity, although this could not be confirmed.
