REPORT DATE: 07-27-2024 REPORT TIME: 2200 UTC REGION: ATLANTIC SUB REGION: MID ATLANTIC U.S. AREA/BLOCK: NORTH ATLANTIC 7004 IMAGE DATE: 07-27-2024 IMAGE TIME: 1535 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL2B MODE: Multispectral RESOLUTION: 10 meter LOCATION: 40°06'02" N/69°55'03" W AREA: 3.21 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: High REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The anomaly appeared to emanate from the site of Wreck 1487, a known repeat leak source. It extended northward immediately from the wreck, then curved westward in a meandering open loop, and measured approximately 12.3 nmi in total length, and up to 0.25 nmi in width. The anomaly had a dark appearance with sharp edges, and also exhibited prominent streaks of milky-white coloring suggesting possible thicker oil. Winds at the time of the image were from the S at under 5 kts. UNCERTAINTIES: A number of likely biogenic false positives were located near and across portions of the anomaly. The farthest extent of the anomaly appeared to merge directly with one of these false positives, lowering certainty as to the exact extent of the possible oil. Still, the repeat leak nature of the anomaly allowed for high confidence that the anomaly contained an oil slick.
