REPORT DATE: 08-06-2024 REPORT TIME: 1209 UTC REGION: PACIFIC SUB REGION: CALIFORNIA AREA/BLOCK: N/A IMAGE DATE: 08-06-2024 IMAGE TIME: 0150 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5X20 meter LOCATION: 34°01'01" N/118°39'47" W AREA: 24.18 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: Medium REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. Off the coast of Central Malibu (California), the slick was observed emanating from the shore near Paradise Cove Beach and extended eastwards 16.7 nmi along the coastline, stopping roughly 1 nmi North of the Santa Monica Pier. The slick had strong contrast with the surrounding water and demonstrated characteristics associated with oil such as feathering around its edges. Winds at the time of image were from the west at 10 knots, aligning well with the orientation of the anomaly. Due to the lack of known oil infrastructure in the area, Confidence was determined to be Medium. UNCERTAINTIES: The slick distinguishes itself from typical natural phenomena due to the fact that it seems to be emanating from a specific point; Paradise Cove Beach. In particular, there is a pier located on the beach which could be the potential source of the anomaly.
