REPORT DATE: 03-25-2025 REPORT TIME: 1345 UTC REGION: INTERNATIONAL WATERS SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: N/A IMAGE DATE: 03-24-2025 IMAGE TIME: 2315 UTC DATA SOURCE: RADARSAT2 MODE: ScanSAR Narrow VV RESOLUTION: 25 meter LOCATION: 26°08'01" N/79°33'45" W AREA: 3.23 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: High REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The segmented anomaly in two pieces spanned a length of about 4.5 nm, was 0.3 nm at its widest, and was thought to have resulted from ship pollution. The segments displayed a strong contrast against the surrounding ocean surface and terminated abruptly, suggesting that they were not naturally formed. Due to these characteristics, we had high confidence that the reported anomaly was caused by ship pollution. Winds came from the south at approximately 10 kt at the time the satellite image was captured. UNCERTAINTIES: Because the anomalies were not directly connected to the source, there was ambiguity about their true origin. However, the linear orientation and motion of the suspected vessel supported our belief that it, having moved into international waters, could have caused the pollution event. Additionally, a false positive, thought to have been caused by ship wake, was located south of the reported anomaly.
