REPORT DATE: 05-04-2025 REPORT TIME: 1245 UTC REGION: GULF OF AMERICA SUB REGION: N/A AREA/BLOCK: CHANDELEUR SOUND 48 IMAGE DATE: 05-04-2025 IMAGE TIME: 0002 UTC DATA SOURCE: SENTINEL1A MODE: Interferometric Wide (IW) VV RESOLUTION: 5X20 meter LOCATION: 29°46'09" N/89°22'41" W AREA: 0.69 square kilometers CONFIDENCE: High REPORT MAP/GIS FILES: https://www.ospo.noaa.gov/products/ocean/marinepollution/ REMARKS: Possible oil was observed in satellite imagery. This anomaly is unconfirmed as oil. The suspected spill exhibited strong contrast against the surrounding ocean background and appeared to originate from a facility in Eli Bay, Louisiana. The linear slick measured approximately 1.5 nautical miles in length and reached a maximum width of 0.2 nautical miles. The spill extended eastward from its source, aligning with prevailing westerly winds of 10 to 15 knots at the time the satellite image was captured. UNCERTAINTIES: The anomaly reduced radar backscatter, a characteristic commonly associated with marine oil spills. Additionally, its apparent connection to an oil facility further supports the likelihood that the observed anomaly is indeed an oil spill, leaving little room for uncertainty.
