DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z April 11th, 2025

SMOKE:
South
Dakota/Iowa/Missouri/Wisconsin/Illinois/Kansas/Oklahoma/Nebraska/Arkansas...
A large area of light density smoke attributed to ongoing fires was
observed this evening drifting southeastward from eastern South Dakota,
central Iowa, northern Missouri, southern Wisconsin, and northern
Illinois. An area of moderate density smoke was seen moving south across
eastern Kansas into northern Oklahoma. Several sizable smoke plumes were
also seen scattered throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Arkansas.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Mexican Coasts/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of
America/Texas/Louisinia...
An area of light density smoke and aerosols attributed to scattered
agricultural burning, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources
throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed this morning along
the western coast of Mexico, with areas of more dense smoke/aerosols seen
near southern Central America. The combination of smoke and aerosols
was observed extending west into the Pacific Ocean off the southwest
coast of Mexico and Central America. On the Gulf side, smoke plumes were
observed drifting southward into the Gulf of America from southern Texas
and Louisiana, and continued to drift southerly along the eastern coast
of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
