DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z May 4, 2025

SMOKE:
Western United States...
A thin, elongated layer of light density smoke was observed this
morning, extending over Northern California, central Oregon, and
central Washington.

Central Canada/Central and Southern United States...
An area of remnant to light smoke from fires in western United States and
western/southern Canada was observed moving eastward across Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, and parts of Ontario. The smoke extended south through the U.S
Mid-West and central Plains, and settling as far south as Oklahoma and
Arkansas. The smoke also mingled with smoke in Texas that was produced
from separate fire activity in Mexico.

Northern-Central Mexico/Central-Southern Texas...
A large area of light smoke covered extended from Northern Mexico to
Texas from widespread fire activity across most of Mexico. The smoke
overlapped towards central and southern Mexico with the combination of
mixed aerosols and smoke mentioned below.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Gulf of America/Bay of Campeche/Pacific
Ocean...
An area of light density smoke/aerosol attributed to widespread seasonal
fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources throughout
Central and Southern Mexico was observed over the coastline of Southern

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
