DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1440Z May 5, 2025

SMOKE:
Central United States/Eastern Canada...
A large and coherent region of light density smoke was observed extending
from the Upper Midwest and Southern Manitoba into Ontario. This smoke
region also connected to the area of light density smoke drifting eastward
across the Gulf States into South Carolina.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Gulf of America...
An area of light density smoke and aerosols attributed to widespread
seasonal fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources
throughout Central and Southern Mexico was observed today over the
coastline of Southern Mexico. The combination of smoke and aerosols
progressed northward along the eastern coastline of Mexico merging with
the area of smoke over the Central United States and east into the Gulf
of America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
