DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z May 13, 2025

SMOKE:
Central and Midwestern United States/Southern Canada/Atlantic Ocean...
Light smoke was observed blanketing an area from the tropical Eastern
Pacific, southern and eastern Mexico, the central CONUS, the US Gulf
Coast, southern Canada, and New England. The source of this area of
smoke is wildfire activity in northeastern British Columbia, central
Saskatchewan, and southeastern Manitoba, coupled with presumably
agricultural burning across the central CONUS and coastal plains of
Mexico. The smoke plumes coming from the activity in southeastern Manitoba
were contributing thick smoke to the layer that was moving east-north
eastward. Another fire in central Saskatchewan was also producing moderate
smoke. Fire activity in northeastern British Columbia was obscured by
cloud cover, so smoke was not directly observed being emitted.

DUST:
Nevada...
Light blowing dust was observed being moving over eastern Nevada and
into Idaho after being kicked up across central Nevada.

West Texas…
An area of light blowing dust was observed being kicked up across the
Permian Basin and being blown east-southeastward.

Southern California/southeastern Arizona…
Small areas of light blowing dust were observed from near the Salton
Sea to the Colorado River basin moving eastward to northeastward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
