DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z May 16, 2025

SMOKE:
Central and Southern United States...
A large area of remnant smoke was seen moving from Mexico/the Gulf of
America upward over Central CONUS and eventually making its way east
across the SE states.

Florida…
Multiple fire clusters were seen throughout most of Florida. They were
emitting mostly light to moderate smoke plumes that were moving east
over the Atlantic Ocean.

Arizona…
There were two large fires, the Blind Fire located in Coconino National
Forest near the Happy Jack Passage area and the second being the Greer
Fire near Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Both fires were emitting
light to heavy density smoke plumes that were moving towards the NE
making its way over New Mexico.

Canada…
Wildfires clusters were seen in central Saskatchewan but due to heavy
cloud coverage, smoke plumes were not visible in satellite imagery.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Mexico/Central America/Pacific Ocean/Texas/Gulf of America...
An expansive area of light density smoke and aerosols - attributed to
widespread seasonal fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial
sources throughout western, central, and southern Mexico - was observed
today extending across western, southern, and eastern Mexico, the Pacific
Ocean off Mexico’s western and southern coastlines, the Yucatán
Peninsula, Central America, southeastern Texas, and the Gulf of America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
