DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2350Z May 27, 2025

SMOKE:
Central and Eastern Canada/Northern U.S. Plains/Atlantic Ocean...
By evening, the expansive plume of smoke from large wildfires in
east-central Saskatchewan and west-central Manitoba continued to
intensify and spread. Heavy density smoke remained concentrated over
northern-central Saskatchewan, northern Manitoba, and much of western
Ontario. Moderate density smoke extended through central and southern
Quebec, while light smoke reached farther east into the Atlantic Ocean
off the coast of Nova Scotia. Light to moderate smoke was also observed
spreading southward into the Upper Midwest, including portions of
Minnesota, North Dakota, and Northern Michigan. The core of the thickest
smoke remained near the source regions, with rotational patterns that
spread over southern Nunavut and the eastern edge of Hudson Bay.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Central and Southern Mexico/Gulf of America/Southern Texas/Pacific
Ocean...
An area of light density smoke/aerosol attributed to widespread seasonal
fire activity, volcanic emissions, and industrial sources throughout
Central and Southern Mexico was observed today over the northern and
western Mexico. The combination continued to extend west into the Pacific
Ocean off the coast of southwestern Mexico and Central America. The
combination of smoke and aerosols extended northward along the eastern
coastline of Mexico and into southern Texas

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
