DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2230Z June 28, 2025

SMOKE:
Northern Alaska/Yukon/Canada...
Significant wildfire activity persisted across central and southern Yukon,
eastern British Columbia, southwestern Northwest Territories and much of
Alberta and Saskatchewan. This activity continued to generate an expansive
area of light to moderate density smoke extending form northern and
western Alaska eastward across Canada to western Quebec. Within the broad
plume, denser smoke concentrations were observed over northern Alberta,
northern Saskatchewan, and adjacent southern portions of the Northwestern
Territories and Yukon, where the core wildfire activity was most intense.

Central and Eastern United States…
Additional areas of light smoke were present across portions of the
central Plains, extending into the Midwest and Ohio Valley, as well as
localized plumes visible over the southeastern United States, likely from
smaller regional fires combined with long-ranged transport from Canada.

Northern Baja California/Mexico/Southwest U.S.…
Light smoke associated with fire activity along the northern Baja
California and southern California border region extended northeast into
southwestern Arizona and southern New Mexico, where it mixed with thin
smoke from other scattered regional fires.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
