DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

SMOKE:
Central and Northern Canada...
Wildfires continued to burn in the Northwest Territories, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and generated a large area of light
smoke which covered most of the northern continent from Alaska to the
Atlantic. Large plumes and thicker density smoke concentrated in the
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and drifted east over Ontario, Quebec,
Newfoundland, and extends into the Atlantic. Medium density smoke was
also seen concentrated in southern Quebec, extending south towards the
northeastern United States.

Alaska…
Wildfires are seen near the Alaskan/Yukon border. Lightly dense smoke
produced by the fire travels towards the east, eventually merging with
the smoke plumes coming from the Canadian wildfires.

Western United States...
Fires in northern California emitted light to moderate smoke plumes
and remained close to the origin of the fire. Fire continues to burn in
central Idaho, producing moderate density plumes drifting towards western
Montana. Larger fires in Utah and northern Arizona generated thick smoke
which spread to the east into a large area of light smoke across Colorado
and Wyoming. Any signs of remnant smoke from yesterday’s smoke analysis
had dissipated early this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
