NOAA-20/VIIRS Chlorophyll Front Products

Chlorophyll (named as Chl for clarity) fronts are biogeographical/ecosystem boundaries associated with zones of elevated primary and secondary productivity and fisheries. Variability in the strength and location of chlorophyll fronts affects key living marine resources, such as demersal and pelagic fish, squid, shrimp, lobster, shellfish, and marine mammals. Chlorophyll frontal products here are generated from Okeanos NOAA20 VIIRS chlorophyll products by using the Belkin-O'Reilly Algorithm (BOA) and the Stripe Noise Reduction Algorithm (SNRA). The products include daily-mean and granule chlorophyll gradient magnitude, and granule chlorophyll gradient direction over five sectors (UV, UZ, VY, VZ, WY) cover the following nine CoastWatch Regions-of-Interest, i.e., Northeast (NE), Southeast (SE), Gulf of Mexico (GM), Caribbean (CB), West Coast (WC), Alaska (AK), Great Lakes (GL), East Tropical Pacific (EP), Hawaii (HI).
